Frequently asked questions
Let’s answer those questions…
How do we get to the house?
Kaaimans River Lodge is only accessible via (easy) river crossing.
Our friendly caretaker will be waiting for you at the car park jetty upon your arrival, where he will row you and your luggage to the house. Alternatively, you can also walk from the parking along the highway footpath to the beach right in front of the house (5min walk) and cross the river there.
It is also often possible to walk through the river (in front of the house) and only get your legs wet (dependant on tide and sand banks).
Where do we park our cars?
There is a public parking area next to the N2 highway.
Search for “Kaaimans River Parking” on Google Maps.
Park your car in the lot as soon as you turn onto this gravel parking from the N2. You will notice a stone jetty on the left.
All Kaaimans residents and guests park in this lot.
Though we have not had any security issues with guests cars, we still advise that you do not leave any valuables in the car.
Is the house pet friendly?
Yes, we love doggos! Just please try keep them from going inside or on the furniture.
Please also bring them their own bed/ blanket to sleep on.
Can we drink the tap water?
Yes – it is municipal/ town water.
Is there electricity/ hot water?
Lol. Yes. We’re not savages.
All our electricity is solar powered. We also have a backup generator (in case of continuous cloud cover).
The Main House outdoor shower is solar heated, whilst the rest of the showers are gas heated.
Is there wifi or signal at the house?
There is no wifi, but there is full signal – so you’ll be able to work remotely (hotspot) and stay connected if you want to… tag us on insta plz (@kaaimansriverlodge) ! 😉
Are there kayaks for us to use?
Yes. We have multiple Kayaks and SUPs down at the jetty.
You are free to use them during your stay to explore and get yourself across the river.
Please always secure kayaks well, and store any SUPs and paddles above the high water mark (ask caretaker for assistance if needed).
Is there a braai grid?
Yes. We have all the necessary braai tools. If something is missing, just ask the caretakers, as someone may have carried it to one of the other accommodations.
You can also buy firewood from the caretaker (cash only, R20 per small bag).
Is there a fridge/ freezer?
The two smaller units (River villa and Rustic views) both have small bar fridges with freezers.
The Deckhouse (Main House) has a large chest fridge and chest freezer.
What do we need to bring?
This is a self-catering accommodation, so please bring your own food & drinks.
There is usually salt & pepper (but these things often get taken by previous guests, so we would still recommend to bring your own if possible).
There is already bedding for all beds, but you are welcome to bring a spare sleeping bag in case of a cold weather forecast (only for cooler months April-Aug).
A head torch can be quite handy. 🙂
What NOT to bring?
Please refrain from bringing any “high electricity consuming” appliances such as: Your own microwave, air fryer, hair dryers, blenders, popcorn makers, toasters, etc. Kaaimans runs on Solar, and these appliances simply drain the batteries too quickly. We have gas stoves and braai areas with pots/ pans/ grids/ potjies etc. All you really need 😉
Please try avoid bringing glass beer bottles.
